1975 – A Veil of Elegance: Alwin Gallery

Glynnis_at_Bosworth_House

This exhibition, Peter’s 5th at the Alwin Gallery was one where 2 different sides of Peter’s life came together to represent the elegance perfectly portrayed in these beautiful paintings. On one side was the impressive Georgian home of his friend in Leicester, Bosworth House, which Peter had visited often; and on the other, one of his A level students who went on to become a professional ballet dancer. Together they would form the perfect storm of elegance which resulted in this body of work.

It was two years after his first visit to his friend’s home when Peter realised that it would be the perfect subject for an exhibition. Then, after Glynnis Williams, his student, had attended his Windows Exhibition in London and Alwin Davies had recognised her potential as a model, it dawned on Peter that these 2 parts of his life could come together to depict the English way of life.  He had always been impressed by the house’s elegance and, using Glynnis along with 2 other models dressed in an elegant manner, used them as the theme for his exhibition which he named appropriately ‘A Veil of Elegance’.

Veil of Elegance
It took him 18 months to complete the 40 works of art and he said at the time “It was hard work trying to get it finished in time, but I did”. This was his 12th one man show and ran for a month over the summer of 1975. However, 2 weeks before the official opening in July of that year, Peter brought all of the paintings up from London and staged a one-day private showing of his work in the very house which featured in the paintings. This created quite a buzz around the exhibition which went on to be very successful.
Glynnis’ recollections of the unusual private showing are of delicious food, atmospheric live music and the beautiful house as a backdrop, rendering the show nothing short of ‘amazing’.
If anyone has the original painting from this exhibition we would love to hear from you or see a colour photograph.
